Advantage One: It helps reduce the risk of damage to the brake caliper or piston. When replacing brake pads, the caliper must be separated to make room for the new brake pads. Failure to do so can result in damage to the piston or caliper, leading to expensive repairs.
Advantage Two: Saves Time and Effort. Without this tool, the process of replacing brake pads can be time-consuming and frustrating. However, with a caliper expander, the job can be done quickly and efficiently, getting you back on the road in no time.
The Disc Brake Pad Expander Caliper is a great tool for anyone who wants to maintain their vehicle's brake system. It's easy to use, saves time and effort, and ensures that new brake pads are installed and aligned correctly. As a result, it helps reduce the risk of damage to the brake caliper or piston, saving costs in the long run.
Steps to Replace Brake Pads
Remove the Wheel
To remove the brake pads, you will need to remove the wheel. Unscrew the wheel nuts or bolts and remove the wheel. Always inspect the wheel nuts or bolts to make sure they are in good and clean condition. Any corrosion should be removed with a wire brush.
Remove the Brake Caliper
Next, you will need to loosen the guide bolts to remove the caliper. You can do this by using a wrench or socket wrench to hold the guide bolts and twist them apart. Use a cable tie or bungee cord to hang them securely.
Remove the Brake Pads
Once the caliper is out of the way, you can remove any clips that may be holding the brake pads in place and remove them from the caliper bracket.
Inspect the Brake Rotors
Inspect the condition of the brake rotors. If there are any severe scratches, you will also need to replace them in pairs.
Grease the new brake pads
Before installing the brake pads, use a wire brush to remove any corrosion from the caliper bracket and its rails, then apply a small amount of Ceratec to the edges and where the backing plate contacts the caliper and its piston. Make sure there is no grease on the friction material.
Install the brake pads
Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, making sure the pads can move freely forwards and backwards and that the friction material is facing the brake disc. Then, unhook and reinstall the brake caliper.
Test the brake pads
When both sides have been checked, press the brake pedal a few times to bring the pads close to the disc surface, then check the brake fluid level and top up if necessary, remove the rag and clean up any excess fluid that may have leaked out.
Reinstall the wheel
Before reinstalling, make sure the mating surfaces of the wheel and hub are clean and free of any corrosion. With the new brake pads installed, you can now put the wheel back on the hub and secure the wheel nuts or bolts by hand.
