Installing an Oil Seal – Procedure
Before installing an oil seal
Inspect the seal thoroughly to ensure there are no blemishes or deformations. A small scratch on the OD can cause the seal to leak. Check the bore to verify there is no wear or residue. The seal and shaft should be lubricated to ensure protection of the lip during initial operation.
Installation Method
It is recommended that an oil seal installation tool be used when installing rotary shaft seals to promote proper engagement and reduce the possibility of seal lift. When using a press tool (preferably an air or hydraulic press tool), ensure that the OD of the tool is 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) smaller than the bore diameter.
Seal lift
Seal lift is when there is more shaft interference on one side of the seal lip, which can negatively affect the function of the oil seal. This can cause more heat to be generated, causing the seal lip to harden and crack. In worse cases, this can cause the spring to break away from the seal lip.
Rebound
When using a rubber covered OD, the seal may spring back after installation. The rubber OD and the bore of the seal create friction and may cause the seal to back out of the mounting point after being pressed in.
Proper Installation
Housing Face Stop Installation
The bottom of the installation tool contacts the machined housing face.
Housing Stop Installation
The bottom of the seal is flush with the inner shoulder of the bore.
Face Stop Installation
The bottom of the installation tool contacts the machined housing face.
Splined Seal Installation
The installation tool is lubricated to prevent splines, keyways and unchamfered shafts from damaging the seal lip.
Strike Plate Installation
When installing the seal, use caution to ensure that the seal and bore are properly aligned.
Shaft Stop Installation
The bottom of the installation tool contacts the face of the shaft.
