Some people try to remove valve seals with pliers, screwdrivers, or other makeshift tools. This can cause damage to the seals, valve stems, valve guides, and even yourself. You need at least two tools to properly remove valve seals: a spring compressor and a seal removal tool.

This is where a high-quality valve spring compressor comes in handy. You need to release spring pressure gradually to protect valves, springs, guides, and other valve train parts from falling into the cylinder or flying out of the shop. This will make it easier for you to reach in and release the valve seals.

Don't skip this step or you might end up replacing valve seals soon. Cleaning the valve stems and valve guides before installing new seals removes dirt, oil, debris, and general grime that can prevent a proper seal. Use a soft cloth or shop towel to thoroughly clean the valve stems and guides before installing new seals.

You may want to dry-install the new seals, but this can cause the seals to tear or crack during installation. It can also create heat and friction during operation.
