Fuel Pump Tank Lid Removal Tool

Locate the fuel pump, open the gas cap, turn the key to the ON position, and listen for the sound of the fuel filler. If working properly, the fuel pump will hum for two to three seconds. If there is no sound, the pump may need to be replaced.

Locate and verify the fuel pump fuse and relay. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a fuse of the same amperage. Check the operation of the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is working properly, your job is done.

Release the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain or drain as much fuel from the tank as possible. Disconnect the filler hose and the electrical connection to the pump.

Support the tank with a jack and a block of wood. Remove any retaining straps or bolts that secure the tank to the frame. Lower the tank. Disconnect the fuel line and remove the fuel pump from the tank. Compare the new fuel pump to the original to verify that the parts are correct.

Install the new fuel pump. Connect the fuel line to the pump. Lift the tank and install the retaining straps. Reconnect the filler pipe hose and electrical connector. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the tank with gasoline. Perform a road test to confirm that the repair was successful.
